General background: William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was the vociferation of an alderman. He was the third child of eight and the eldest put out son. Contemporary records of performances show that several of his plays were on the London stage. Shakespeare wrote rafts of plays. He probably worked with Beaumont and Fletcher. He was always certified of his own audience, that mix bag of aristocrats, wits, sailors and soldiers. Ben Jonson wrote about him in the first folio: he was not of an age, but for all time.
